Peak Bagger Privacy Policy
Last updated: 28 October 2026
Peak Bagger ("the app", "we", "us") helps you tick off the Wainwrights and Munros, plan walks and share your progress with friends. It is made in the United Kingdom. This policy explains what information the app uses, why, and the choices you have. If you have any questions, contact us at support@peakbaggerapp.com.
The short version
- Your location is used on your phone to show you on the map and tick off summits. We do not collect or store your live location on our servers.
- You can use Peak Bagger without an account. If you create one, we store your email address, display name and walking history so they sync between your devices and your friends can see your progress.
- We do not show ads, we do not sell your data, and we do not use analytics or advertising trackers.
What we collect and why
Information that stays on your phone
- Location. When you allow it, the app uses your phone's location to show your position on the map, to follow a route, and to tick off a summit when you come within about 50 metres of it. If you record a walk, the app keeps tracking with your phone locked or in a pocket (with the "Always" or background location permission), and shows a visible indicator while it does. A recording is saved on your phone. It only leaves your phone if you choose to save the walk to your account (see below).
- Your tally, walks, bookmarks, imported GPX routes, journal notes and settings. These are stored on your phone. If you have no account, they never leave it.
- GPX files you import. They are read on your phone and saved in the app. Your files are not uploaded unless you save the walk to your account.
Information we store if you create an account
When you sign in with your email address, we use a service called Supabase to store:
- your email address (used only to sign you in with a one-time code or link);
- your display name and a friend code (so friends can add you);
- your tally (which summits you have climbed and when);
- your walks: name, date, distance, the summits on them and the route line, if you saved a GPS track;
- summit notes, planned walks and replies to plans;
- your friends and the walks you share with them.
We use this to sync your progress between devices and to let friends see it. Your friends can see your display name, your counts, and the walks you share with them. They cannot see your email address.
Information sent to other services
- Maps. The map uses Apple Maps on iPhone and OpenFreeMap on Android. Loading map tiles sends the area you are viewing to those services, as with any online map. The painted map and footpaths use data from OpenStreetMap contributors and are stored in the app.
- Weather. To show a summit forecast, the app asks Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) for the weather at that summit. The request contains the summit's coordinates, not your location.
- Downloads. Photos and the Scotland map are downloaded from our storage when you need them. Your device's IP address is visible to the storage provider when you download, as with any web request.
- Links. Buttons that open other apps or websites (OS Maps, AllTrails, Komoot, Apple Maps, MWIS and others) take you to those services, which have their own privacy policies.
Information we do not collect
We do not collect your contacts, photos, advertising identifiers, payment details (purchases, if added, are handled by Apple or Google), or your precise location history on our servers. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising.
How we use your information
- to provide the features you ask for: the map, summit ticking, route following, syncing and friends;
- to keep your account secure and to prevent abuse;
- to fix problems and to keep the service running.
Under UK data protection law (UK GDPR), our legal bases are performing our contract with you (providing the app and your account) and our legitimate interests (keeping the service secure and working). Where we ask for your permission, such as for location, you can withdraw it at any time in your phone's settings.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your information. We share it only with:
- Supabase, our database and sign-in provider, which stores account data on our behalf;
- your friends, as described above, for the information you choose to share with them;
- authorities, if the law requires it.
Our providers may process data outside the UK. Where they do, we rely on safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
We keep account information while your account exists. If you delete a walk, it is removed from your account. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your profile, tally, walks, notes and friend connections. We may keep limited records where the law requires it. Data stored only on your phone is removed when you delete the app.
Your rights
You have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to our use of your information, and to receive a copy of it. To use these rights, or to delete your account, email support@peakbaggerapp.com and we will respond within one month. You can delete your account yourself in the app: go to the Friends tab and tap Delete my account. This permanently removes your account and the information stored online, and can't be undone. Information saved only on your phone stays there until you delete the app.
You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) if you are unhappy with how we handle your data.
Children
Peak Bagger is not aimed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Safety
Hills are serious places. Peak Bagger's maps, routes, times and forecasts are guides only and can be wrong. Always carry a map and compass, check the forecast, and make your own decisions. The app does not send your location to anyone in an emergency.
Security
Account data is sent over encrypted connections and stored with access rules that limit each person to their own data and what friends share with them. No system is completely secure, so please protect your email account.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date above and tell you in the app or by email.
